Executive Editor Bill Keller and Washington Bureau Chief Dean Baquet Take Marvin Kalb Behind the Headlines, Bylines and Paywalls of a 21st Century Newsroom
Jan 19, 2011
WASHINGTON – From the printing press to the iPad, the way people get their news has evolved dramatically through advances in technology. Nevertheless, everyday since Sept. 18, 1851, one news source has remained constant -- The New York Times. Through the integration of new and traditional media, The Times has managed to survive and thrive in a rapidly changing media landscape. On the next edition of The Kalb Report, moderator Marvin Kalb will get the inside scoop on the nation’s pre-eminent newspaper from two of its top decision makers - Executive Editor Bill Keller and Washington Bureau Chief Dean Baquet. The forum will take place on Monday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. in the main ballroom of the National Press Club (529 14th St., NW, Washington, D.C.).
"The Times is arguably the best newspaper in America,” said Mr. Kalb. “When it has scoops, we all have scoops. When it is in trouble, all of journalism may be in trouble. How does it function these days? What are its successes/challenges? Indeed, with all the technological changes we see about us, what will The Times look like in 10 years? To talk to the executive editor and the Washington bureau chief of The Times is something special. I can't wait."
Executive producer Michael Freedman adds, “At the editorial core of The New York Times is a gathering, sorting and reporting process comprising skill, perseverance, patience, respect, fairness and a healthy curiosity. As we pull back the curtain on the Gray Lady we will explore how, in this digital age, we can create a new tower of strength in journalism rather than a Tower of Babel.”
The Kalb Report is produced by the GW Global Media Institute in partnership with the National Press Club and the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School. For the eighth consecutive season, the series is underwritten by a grant from Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. Since 1994, the partnership has produced 70 forums with guests including Rupert Murdoch, Walter Cronkite, Christiane Amanpour, Katie Couric, Bob Costas, Ken Burns and Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel. All forums offer open media coverage.
Bill Keller has been the executive editor of The New York Times since 2003. Over the course of his 27 years at The New York Times, Mr. Keller has held a number of positions including op-ed columnist, senior writer, managing editor and foreign editor. His overseas experiences for The Times include serving as the chief of The Times bureau in Johannesburg from 1992-1995 and as a correspondent in Moscow from 1986-1991. Mr. Keller was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in March 1989 for his coverage of the Soviet Union.
Dean Baquet was appointed Washington Bureau Chief for The New York Times in March 2007, after serving as editor of the Los Angeles Times. Mr. Baquet had originally joined The New York Times in 1990 as a metropolitan reporter. He later served as special projects editor, deputy metropolitan editor and national editor for The Times. Prior to his career with The New York Times, Mr. Baquet spent six years at The Chicago Tribune where he served as associate metropolitan editor for investigations and chief investigative reporter. He earned a Pulitzer Prize in investigative reporting in 1988 after leading a three person team in documenting corruption in the Chicago City Council.
Moderator Marvin Kalb is a James Clark Welling Presidential Fellow at the George Washington University and Edward R. Murrow Professor Emeritus at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Over the course of his distinguished 30-year career in broadcast journalism, Mr. Kalb served as chief diplomatic correspondent for both CBS News and NBC News, and moderator of Meet the Press. He went on to serve as the founding director of the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Among his many honors are two Peabody Awards, the DuPont Prize from Columbia University, the 2006 Fourth Estate Award from the National Press Club and more than a half-dozen Overseas Press Club awards.
Executive Producer Michael Freedman is a professor in the GW School of Media and Public Affairs and executive director of The GW Global Media Institute. A 30-year broadcast journalist, network executive, university administrator and professor, Mr. Freedman served as general manager of CBS Radio Network News, managing editor for the broadcast division of United Press International and vice president for communications at the George Washington University. Mr. Freedman is the recipient of more than 85 honors for journalistic excellence.
Producer Heather Date serves as associate director of the GW Global Media Institute. Ms. Date is a former CNN producer and a graduate of the GW School of Media and Public Affairs.
The Kalb Report series is directed by Robert Vitarelli, a 39-year CBS News veteran and a Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award winner.
The George Washington University Global Media Institute explores the evolving roles and responsibilities of the media in our society and the transformation of journalism in the 21st century. The institute produces the highly acclaimed Kalb Report public television and radio series as well as the weekly network radio programs This Just In! and GW Presents American Jazz. The Institute is also the administrative home to the POLITICO-George Washington University Battleground Poll.

See the [Creative Commons] definition of what this means. "Photos (c) Bruce Guthrie" is fine for attribution. (Commercial use folks including AI scrapers can of course contact me.) Feel free to use in publications and pages with attribution but you don't have permission to sell the photos themselves. A free copy of any printed publication using any photographs is requested. Descriptive text, if any, is from a mixture of sources, quite frequently from signs at the location or from official web sites; copyrights, if any, are retained by their original owners.

I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, some system options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm sure you're thrilled by your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.
If you are in fact human, please email me at guthrie.bruce@gmail.com and I can check if your designation was made in error. Given your number of hits, that's unlikely but what the hell.
