In the situation comedy, Julia, Diahann Carroll played the role of Julia Baker, a widow and nurse raising her young son. The first TV show to depict a black middle-class family, and the first since the 1950s sitcom Beulah to feature a black woman, Julia and its glamorous star challenged historically stereotypical roles of women on television.

AAOPRA_181025_080.JPG: Canceled Check, 1977
After arriving in Baltimore, Winfrey, who had previously straightened her hair, adopted a natural hairstyle. As she later recalled, her managers at the television station disliked the look and encouraged her to visit an upscale salon in New York City to have it restyled. Winfrey saved the check she wrote, and noted the disastrous outcome: "Hair fell out."
