Specific picture descriptions: Photos above with "i" icons next to the bracketed sequence numbers (e.g. "[1] ") are described as follows:
ANIMAL_030131_006.JPG: The center tree is the "Tree of Life" which is the central image of the park. The tree is fake.
ANIMAL_030131_010.JPG: The line for "It's Tough To Be A Bug" winds under the Tree of Life. Since I got there early, there was no line and I moved quickly by without realizing I was actually winding my way around the tree. The tree is 14 stories tall and has 325 animals woven into its design. You can see it from most places in the park.
ANIMAL_030131_037.JPG: This is part of the "It's Tough to be a Bug" waiting area. The show itself was a 3D show (meaning it was a movie) that was pretty cute which included simulated bugs running beneath you.
ANIMAL_030131_045.JPG: One of the features of Animal Kingdom is in the "Africa" section (like every Disney park, they segment the park into distinctly themed sub-parks). It features a ride called Kilimanjaro Safaris, where you board a bus and go out in the simulated savanna. When the park portion of Animal Kingdom opened, Disney hired a bunch of zoo curators to take care of the animals, including quite a few from the National Zoo in Washington DC.
ANIMAL_030131_086.JPG: Note the water. You can see the distinct steps under it. The ponds and such are fake in the park. Even the "dirt road" that the trucks were riding over were actually concrete, with embedded tire tracks in them. When you saw boulders or unusual trees, they were typically concrete as well.
ANIMAL_030131_161.JPG: I think these animals (meerkats) are great! They seem to enjoy hamming it up for an audience. The buzzards nearby aren't predators, the meerkats are. The buzzards stick around to pick up leftovers.
ANIMAL_030131_280.JPG: Yep, a petting zoo. Since animals tend to be filthy, there's a nice wash station outside where the water comes out of elephant trunks.
ANIMAL_030131_285.JPG: Bruce Guthrie, Baloo @ Disney's Animal Kingdom
ANIMAL_030131_375.JPG: The Kali River Rapids ride has a big round boat which tends to find its way into every fountain it can find. You stow your bags and such in a relatively waterproof container in the middle. This last part was pretty cute. There are water fountains on either side of the path. If someone on the bridge presses a button, you get wet. Since the bridge is at the end of the ride, you don't realize that this was manually controlled until you can do the same thing to the next vessel.
ANIMAL_030131_388.JPG: Komodo dragon. Watch the tongue.
ANIMAL_030131_417.JPG: Yes. Bats. Got a problem with that? The lady mentioned they hang upside down all of the time except when they relieve themselves.
ANIMAL_030131_528.JPG: This was the kids' part of the Animal Kingdom. They had a series of games of chance/skill set up which required extra fees. Fifty dollars to get into the park and they still hit you for more.
ANIMAL_030131_560.JPG: I don't normally think much about shows but I ended up at "Tarzan Rocks". It started off pretty dorky and then performers started zipping by on rollerblades, doing rope climbing, etc. I felt exhausted just watching them.
ANIMAL_030131_657.JPG: Another show, "Festival of the Lion King". I preferred the "Tarzan Rocks" show better but this one had its interesting times including a guy twirling fire, guys on stilts, trapezes, etc.

Wikipedia Description: Disney's Animal Kingdom
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Disney's Animal Kingdom is a theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort. The fourth park built at the resort, it opened on April 22, 1998, and it is the largest single Disney theme park in the world, covering more than 500 acres (2 kmē). It is also the first Disney theme park to be themed entirely around animal conservation, a philosophy once pioneered by Walt Disney himself. Disney's Animal Kingdom is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, meaning they have met and exceeded the standards in Education, Conservation and Research.
Shortly after the park opened, Disney advertised the park using the fictional word "nahtazu". Pronounced "not a zoo," the word emphasized that the park was more than animal displays found in a typical city zoo. Disney stopped using the phrase in January 2006.
In 2007, the park hosted approximately 9.49 million guests, ranking it the fifth-most visited amusement park in the United States and eight-most visited in the world.
Dedication:
Welcome to a kingdom of animals... real, ancient and imagined: a kingdom ruled by lions, dinosaurs and dragons; a kingdom of balance, harmony and survival; a kingdom we enter to share in the wonder, gaze at the beauty, thrill at the drama, and learn.
—Michael Eisner April 22, 1998
Themed areas:
The park is made up of seven themed areas. However, the original plans called for another area.
Oasis:
Upon entering the park, guests must walk through this area to get into any of the other lands in the park. The Oasis consists of different paths leading to Discovery Island which walk guests past animal habitats such as muntjac, cavy, spoonbills, ducks, fish, turtles, wallabies, giant anteaters, babirusa, Hyacinth Macaws, and others. A Rainforest Cafe is also located at the entrance of the Oasis.
Discovery Island:
The main land in the park (previously known as Safari Village), Discovery Island is the c ...More...

2003 photos: Equipment this year: I decided my Epson digital camera wasn't quite enough for what I wanted. Since I already had Compact Flash chips for it, I had to find another camera which used CF chips. That brought me to buy the Fujifilm S602 Zoom in March 2003. A great digital camera, I used it exclusively for an entire year.
Trips this year: Three-week trip this year out west, mostly in Utah.
Number of photos taken this year: 68,000.
