Activist Dorie Ladner passed on March 11. She was part of most of the pivotal civil rights events of the 1960s including the Freedom Riders, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Woolworth lunch counter sit-ins, the 1963 March on Washington, Medgar Evers (she had dinner with him hours before he was assassinated). She's seen here at President Lincoln's Cottage in 2017. I was the person who created her initial Wikipedia entry.

On March 13, 2020, COVID-19 was declared a national health emergency in the United States. The first confirmed case in the United States was recorded on January 20, 2020 in Washington state, and the first confirmed US death from COVID occurred on February 29, 2020. In October/November, 2020, Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg installed In America: How Could This Happen outside of RFK stadium, consisting of one white flag for every US death from COVID. When it was de-installed, there were 267,000 flags. In September/October, 2021, now In America: Remember (shown here) was installed on the grounds of the National Mall and, when it was deinstalled, there were 700,975 flags. Four+ years into the pandemic, 6.8 million Americans have been hospitalized for COVID and over 1.1 million have died according to the CDC.
For a slideshow of some of my favorite images from both installations, try this link
A short time-lapse from the Washington Monument showing the flags blowing in the wind is on Google Drive at this link (it looks better if you view it full-screen).
