Description of Pictures: The 2012 National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade® is Saturday, April 14 from 10:00am to 12:30pm, rain or shine. One of DC’s largest spectator events, the energy-filled Parade runs along Constitution Avenue from 7th to 17th streets, NW, and is televised live on ABC7/WJLA-TV and NewsChannel8. The Parade will be nationally syndicated for the first time after being shown live.
Vibrant costumes and blossom-inspired décor create the look of nation’s premier springtime parade. Giant colorful helium balloons, elaborate floats, marching bands from across the country, and performers burst down Constitution Avenue in a grand spectacle of music and showmanship seen only once a year during the Festival. ABC’s Katie Couric co-hosts the Parade with special correspondent Alex Trebek of Jeopardy and ABC7’s Alison Starling and Leon Harris.
The impressive lineup of talent covers many genres and styles. Some of the outstanding performers include Haley Reinhart, American Idol season 10 finalist and singer-songwriter Javier Colon, 2011 winner of The Voice. Siobhan Magnus, American Idol finalist, sings a rendition of “Are You Ready for a Miracle?” Washington, DC native Nathan Pacheco captures hearts with his dazzling tenor voice. Performances also come from Mary Mary, the Gospel sister duo of Erica Atkins-Campbell and Trecina Atkins-Campbell, and international dance music icon Kristine W. The Washington Performing Arts Society’s Men, Women, and Children’s Gospel Choir serenades the crowd with traditional and inspirational songs. Miss America 2012 Laura Kaeppeler’s operatic vocal talent impresses. She is accompanied by state representatives from the Miss America and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen organizations.
Giant helium balloons fly through the sky, including Miss Piggy and Scooby Doo. This year, the performance area expands across the steps of the National Archives steps, when over 1,500 youth from around the country perform as part of the Youth Choir and All-Star Tap Team. ...More...

Wikipedia Description: National Cherry Blossom Festival
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a spring celebration in Washington, D.C., commemorating the March 27, 1912, gift of Japanese cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City to the city of Washington, D.C. Mayor Ozaki donated the trees to enhance the growing friendship between the United States and Japan and also celebrate the continued close relationship between the two nations. Large and colorful helium balloons, floats, marching bands from across the country, music and showmanship are parts of the Festival's parade and other events. ...
Cherry Blossom Festival
The first "Cherry Blossom Festival" was held in late 1934 under joint sponsorship by numerous civic groups, becoming an annual event. The cherry trees had by this point become an established part of the nation's capital. In 1938, plans to cut down trees to clear ground for the Jefferson Memorial prompted a group of women to chain themselves together at the site in protest. A compromise was reached where more trees would be planted along the south side of the Basin to frame the Memorial. A Cherry Blossom Pageant was begun in 1940.
On December 11, 1941, four trees were cut down. It is suspected that this was retaliation for the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan four days earlier, though this was never confirmed. In hopes of dissuading people from further attacks upon the trees during the war, they were referred to as "Oriental" flowering cherry trees for the war's duration. Suspended during World War II, the festival resumed in 1947 with the support of the Washington, D.C., Board of Trade and the D.C. Commissioners.
In 1948, the Cherry Blossom Princess and U.S. Cherry Blossom Queen program were started by the National Conference of State Societies. A Princess was selected from each state and federal territory, with a queen chosen to reign over the festival. In 1952, Japan requested help restoring the ch ...More...

2012 photos: Equipment this year: My mainstays were the Fuji S100fs, Nikon D7000, and the new Fuji X-S1. I also used an underwater Fuji XP50 and a Nikon D600. The first three cameras all broke this year and had to be repaired.
Trips this year:
three Civil War Trust conferences (Shepherdstown, WV, Richmond, VA, and Williamsburg, VA),
a week-long family reunion cruise of the Caribbean,
another week-long family reunion in the Wisconsin Dells (with lots of in-transit time in Ohio and Indiana), and
my 7th consecutive San Diego Comic-Con trip (including side trips to Zion, Bryce, the Grand Canyon, etc).
Ego strokes: I had a picture of Miss DC, Ashley Boalch, published in the Washington Post. I had a photograph of the George Segal San Francisco Holocaust memorial used as the cover of Quebec Francais (issue 165). Not being able to read French, I'm not entirely sure what the article is about but, hey! And I guess what could be considered to be a positive thing, my site is now established enough that spammers have noticed it and I had to block 17,000 file description postings for Viagra and whatever else..
Number of photos taken this year: just below 410,000.
