- Description of Pictures: Wilmington Renaissance Corporation announced today that Wilmington's Downtown Dino Days will unveil Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at noon in front of the Delaware College of Art & Design at 600 N. Market Street. Downtown Dino Days is a public art project, presented by DuPont in partnership with the Office of the Mayor, Wilmington Renaissance Corporation (WRC) and the Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD). The dinos will be on display throughout Wilmington's Market Street area from May 3rd through October 19th, after which they will be auctioned to benefit DCAD's scholarship and capital campaigns.
"We are thrilled to be involved in such an incredibly unique project," said Sylvia S. Banks, DuPont's Manager of Corporate Contributions. "The participation of more than 40 sponsors and artists speaks to the energy and enthusiasm in Wilmington's community."
Forty local artists have been working hard since the end of January to turn their naked dinos into unforgettable pieces of art. The 48 dinos, 18 male, 18 female and 12 babies, will be strategically placed on sidewalks up Market Street and around Rodney Square, creating a walkable tour of dinos.
"The quality and quantity of artists' submissions to this project was simply overwhelming," said James Lecky, DCAD Director. "We are so pleased to help lead this art project, as we recognize its ability to not only be fun, but also to stimulate Wilmington's economy and downtown energy. Dino visitors will be astounded by what they see!"
The finished dinos will range from train conductors to ballerinas and American flags to astronauts. In conjunction with these friendly creatures, a number of dino-related activities have also been planned, including dino discussions led by the Delaware Museum of Natural History, coloring contests, souvenir sales and children's events.
"I invite families to come to downtown Wilmington and enjoy the Dinos and then spend the day," said Mayor James M. Baker. "This is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to explore our City and experience Dino Days. Cities should be fun places to be and the Dinos are another example of the community coming together to present something that benefits our entire City."
Dino Days has been under development since Spring 2001 and has been led by a committee of local residents, artists, business and government representatives. Calls for artists and sponsors were conducted in December '01 with each being matched with the other by the end of January '02. The artists have had their dinos since early February '02 and will return them to the Delaware College of Art & Design on April 22nd. Following the May 1st unveiling, the dinos will be installed over the course of two days and will be up and ready for friendly visitors by Friday, May 3rd - just in time for that evening's Art Loop.
"We are incredibly eager to see the dressed-up dinos grace the sidewalks of downtown Wilmington," said William C. Wyer, WRC Managing Director. "This is a tremendous opportunity to bring visitors to our City and we anticipate an unprecedented number of tourists to visit downtown's dinos during Summer 2002."

I love well-behaved spiders! They are, in fact, how most people find my site. Unfortunately, my network has a limited bandwidth and pictures take up bandwidth. Spiders ask for lots and lots of pages and chew up lots and lots of bandwidth which slows things down considerably for regular folk. To counter this, you'll see all the text on the page but the images are being suppressed. Also, some system options like merges are being blocked for you.
Note: Permission is NOT granted for spiders, robots, etc to use the site for AI-generation purposes. I'm sure you're thrilled by your ability to make revenue from my work but there's nothing in that for my human users or for me.
If you are in fact human, please email me at guthrie.bruce@gmail.com and I can check if your designation was made in error. Given your number of hits, that's unlikely but what the hell.
