During World War II, the Nazis captured and plundered much of Europe’s archival heritage. At the war’s end, the victorious Red Army found many of these documents and rushed them to Moscow, where they remained hidden for almost half a century. Patricia Kennedy Grimsted of the Harvard University Ukrainian Research Institute recounts the seizure of these records, the political battle over their restitution, and the eventual return of these documents to their countries of origin.
