Description of Pictures: The Private History of Vietnam: Art Beltrone and Jan Scruggs will discuss two books honoring those who served during the Vietnam War. Beltrone, author of Vietnam Graffiti: Messages from a Forgotten Troopship (Howell Press, 2004), tells the story of the troopship Gen. Nelson M. Walker. Beltrone discovered that the ship contained hundreds of bunk canvases covered with inked messages that reveal the thoughts of people on their way to a combat zone. Scruggs, founder and president of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, discusses Offerings at the Wall: Artifacts from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Collection (Turner Publishing, 1995). The first offering at the wall—a Purple Heart thrown into the memorial's cement as it was being poured—presaged the flood of items that visitors would leave at the memorial. Scruggs' book provides a glimpse of some of the 30,000 objects commended to the dead.
Introductions were provided by Richard Boylan, Senior Military Archivist, National Archives and Records Administration.

2005 photos: Equipment this year: I used four cameras -- two Fujifilm S7000 cameras (which were plagued by dust inside the lens), a new Fujifilm S5200 (nice but not great and I hated the proprietary xD memory chips), and a Canon PowerShot S1 IS (returned because it felt flimsy to me). I gave my Epson camera to my catsitter. Both of the S7000s were in for repairs over Christmas.
Trips this year: Florida (for Lotusphere), a driving trip down south (seeing sites in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia), Williamsburg, and Chicago.
Number of photos taken this year: 147,000.
