Existing comment: Downtown Gallery catalog for the Kuniyoshi retrospective loan exhibition, 1942

In 1941, Kuniyoshi's dealer Edith Halpert organized a retrospective exhibition at the Downtown Gallery. All proceeds of the exhibition were donated to United China Relief. The press release paints Kuniyoshi as emblematic of the "American Dream:" "The evolution of Kuniyoshi is a significant chapter in American art and life. It is a characteristic American story of opportunity and success… It is the story of the development of a great talent enriched by the opportunities in American life and in turn enriching that life. It is the story of art and life in a democracy."
