While in Springfield, John Brown had formed a friendship with one of his employees, an African-American man named Thomas Thomas. When Brown later departed Springfield with his family, he presented this chair to Thomas' mother, Mrs. Sophia Thomas. Upon her death, this chair was left to her son and according to Thomas' widow Martha, was much prized for him for many years.
