Private citizens and organizations helped build the Washington Monument. During the first phase of construction, the Washington National Monument Society funded and began construction. After the Civil War, Congress and the US Army Corps of Engineers took the lead.
The public-private partnerships that built the monument continue to this day. After the 2011 earthquake, the National Park Service, the Trust for the National Mall, and private citizen David Rubenstein came together to fund the repairs.
