Did you know Washington was an expert mapmaker? He drew this turnip plot when he was only 16. Washington later worked as a surveyor and mapped large areas of Virginia.

Plantation Owner:
George Washington retired from military service to a quiet life at Mount Vernon in 1758. He married Martha Dandridge Custis the following year. For the remainder of his life, Washington managed the plantation and owned as many as 318 enslaved people.
