Existing comment: "There is a loyalty born of time and experience. Administrations change from one political faith to another, but these fellows go on serving faithfully."
-- Irwin "Ike" Hoover, electrician and chief usher, 1891-1933

Serving the First Family:
The White House could not fulfill its many functions without a steadfast residence staff.
For many years, each first family brought their own servants to the White House. However, the growing burden of presidential responsibilities and rising cost of maintaining the Executive Residence highlighted the need for a permanent White House staff. Today, the staff works behind the scenes to support the White House's official functions while also service the first family. Often laboring under extraordinary circumstances, the residential staff honors the presidency by truly making the White House a "home."
