Existing comment: Host for the Nation:
Most people entertain friends and family in their homes.
The president and first lady also host world leaders on behalf of the entire nation. Each carefully planned state visit follows strict protocol governing everything from the order in which guests enter a room to where they sit at dinner. Following the tradition set by President John F. Kennedy (1961-63), the president usually greets guests with a stately arrival ceremony on the State Lawn. The visitors then attend receptions, formal dinners, and performances which are frequently held on the State Floor. These official visits play a vital role in strengthening America's ties to other countries.
