Presidents have often used the White House to showcase American artists and musicians. Musical performances have been a part of White House entertaining ever since the US Marine Band played at President John Adams's (1797-1801) public reception on New Year's Day, 1801. Since then, famous artists from pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff to singer Frank Sinatra have given concerts at the White House. Presidents and their guests have also enjoyed ballet, opera, and Broadway musicals.
