Existing comment: The Greenhouses:
A hothouse, known as an orangery, was created on the east side of the White House in 1835. In 1857, it was removed and replaced by a greenhouse/conservatory to the west of the White House that was gradually expanded over the next four decades. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt (1901-09) removed the greenhouses to make room for the West Wing.
