Existing comment: History of the White House Fence
To learn more about the fence replacements project, please visit go.nps.gov/whitehousefence

The design and materials of the White House fence have evolved over the past two centuries. The first perimeter fence was a wood rail fence constructed during Thomas Jefferson's presidency around 1801. Later, he created additional privacy by replacing the original wooden rail structure with a stone wall. In 1818, beautiful iron gates and railings were added to the north front. The structures created an elegant facade along Pennsylvania Avenue when they were completed in 1819.
