Existing comment: Later in his life, Fogel's paintings were less representational yet he continued to explore the spatial needs of a two-dimensional picture on a very large scale. He continued to pull and manipulate spaces, colors and linear movement to meet the need of the picture plane. In a 1959 interview, Mr. Fogel said that his paintings were not abstract, they were what he saw. Fogel was a passionate painter who could make a two-dimensional surface boil and swirl.
