This is one of approximately 200 chairs that stood in the mess hall of the soldiers' home (see the interior image of that dining hall on the wall panel at left). Following the institution's closing in 1941, its furnishings and artifacts became the property of the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). In 1957, upon the opening of the nearby UDC Memorial Building, the chairs assumed a place of honor in the Great Hall of that national headquarters.
