Mademoiselle Luguet in a Coat and Hat, ca 1883
Painter and printmaker Mary Cassatt is best known as the only American artist invited to exhibit with the French impressionists. After her friend and mentor Edgar Degas guided her first efforts as a printmaker in the late 1870s, she became proficient in both etching and drypoint, pulling black-and-white prints on her own press. She also experimented with less-conventional methods, including rare forays into softground etching. For Mademoiselle Luguet in a Coat and Hat -- an image of a friend's young daughter -- she manipulated the medium skillfully to achieve a rich tonal effect.
