Existing comment: after Winslow Homer
Sunday Morning in Old Virginia, 1890
In the post-Civil War years, Winslow Homer's portrayals of formerly enslaved African Americans enjoying new freedoms found a favorable response in the North. His 1877 oil, Sunday Morning in Old Virginia, pictures a newly literate younger generation reading the Bible to an elder. In 1890, Homer permitted the reproduction of his painting in photogravure, a new process for replicating photographic images. Recently developed in Europe, the technical breakthrough soon became the preferred medium for printing images in books, journals, and limited-edition portfolios.
