Existing comment: James McBey
Venetian Night, 1930
Born near Aberdeen, McBey received formal training at Graydon's School of Art but taught himself the technique of etching. He even constructed his own printing press at just fifteen years of age! McBey lived much of his life in North Africa but traveled throughout the Mediterranean region and produced a number of Venetian subjects. When compared with his desert scene, also in this exhibition, this print demonstrates McBey's skill at creating a wide variety of atmospheric effects, from the desert haze in Dawn to the darkened canals of Venice, as here.
