The Long View of Prague, 1649
Hollar made this etching after a visit to Prague in the company of his patron the aristocrat and intellectual Earl of Arundel. It is a tour de force of virtuoso observation and execution, and one of many such topographical views Hollar made after famous cities. This achievement was not equaled until two centuries later by the French etcher Charles Meryon whose panoramic view of San Francisco (based on a series of photographs) is also in this exhibition.
