Existing comment: Case 3: Public Appearances:
Official portraits of Russia's last imperial czar and his family abound, continuing a long-established tradition of European court portraiture. Whether painted or photographed, their tiny images filled many a frame by the Faberge firm. Czarina Alexandra Feodorovna and her daughters sometimes wore an elaborate traditional headdress, the kokoshnik, while Nicholas II and his son often appeared in uniforms bedecked with medals. More casual images also survive in great numbers, for the family avidly embraced snapshot photography, a popular new technology at the turn of the 20th century.
