Within the city, feed grew scarce and on June 4 all surplus provisions were seized and rations issues to soldier and civilian alike. By the 20th, a full day's allotment was "Two common biscuits, two rashers (slices) of bacon, a few peas and a spoon full of rice..." To add further distress, drinking water was in short supply.
