Telephones and Computers:
Telephone service -- and, much later, faxes, cell phones, email, and the Internet, dramatically improved people's ability to communicate and transmit and receive information. Each technology spawned an industry. In 1969, the Department of Defense began work that led to the Internet, which led to a cluster of high tech firms in Northern Virginia that expanded from military to civilian applications. Today, tens of thousands of Virginians work in systems integration, software engineering, telecommunications, wireless technology, and information services. By bringing buyers and sellers together, however, the Internet threatens such traditional jobs as travel and real estate agents, stock brokers, and auctioneers.
