1917: Facing the Horrors of War
American involvement in global conflicts began in 1917, and Virginians served and sacrificed in all the major wars of the century that followed. Among the horrors they encouraged -- and perhaps the most terrifying -- was poison gas. Although banned by western nations in 1899, it is still used today. Most recently, dictators in Iraq and Syria have released poison gas to kill thousands of civilians unprotected by masks.
