1765: Taxation without Representation: The Stamp Act
To reduce its share of the cost of defending the American frontier, the English Parliament required that all official documents, newspapers, almanacs, and pamphlets in America be taxed and stamped. In response, the colonists chose to boycott British goods, not because the tax was high but because without representation in Parliament they had no voice in the decision.
