1767: The Deprivation of American Freedom
Following the Stamp Act, the English Parliament passed the Townshend Acts, which, in addition to paper, taxed tea and glass -- luxury objects. The cost of this cruet stands rose. The wealthy complained. In Virginia, George Washington wrote to George Mason, "Our lordly Masters in Great Britain will be satisfied with nothing less than the deprivation of American freedom." The colonies moved closer to revolution.
