b 10 July 1943 / d 6 February 1993

Arthur Ashe began his tennis career on the colored-only courts of segregated Richmond. After a strong amateur career, Ashe became the first African American to win the World Championship Tennis singles title at Wimbledon in 1975. Off the courts, Ashe fought for racial justice in the United States and overseas, vocally opposing apartheid in South Africa. Ashe died in 1993.
