Oliver White Hill, Sr., was a civil rights attorney who helped abolish the legal concept of "separate but equal." After graduating from Howard Law School in 1933, Hill returned to Richmond and practiced law until 1998. He fought for equal pay for black teachers, African American voting rights, and myriad other issues of racial equality. In 1999, President Bill Clinton awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
