The introduction of wireless mass media helped to soften regional identities.

The wireless transmission of electromagnetic signals made radio from first form of mass media to compete with newspapers. All Virginians -- rich and poor, literate or not -- could be reached. Beginning in the 1920s, radio created a culture of mass-consumed news and entertainment that continues to this day. From 1940 to 2009, radio host Harvey Hudson woke up thousands of Virginians using this microphone.
