Existing comment: Watercolor Portrait of Hetty Cary
The Pegram-Cary wedding in January 1865 was a momentarily happy moment in an otherwise dismal winter.
Hetty Cary of Baltimore escaped to Richmond in the early days of the war. There she met John Pegram in 1862. The couple was soon engaged, and their January 1865 wedding was a major social event. Eighteen days later, John was killed near Petersburg, and exactly three weeks after their wedding, his funeral took place in the same church where the couple had been married.
