Existing comment: James Ewell Brown Stuart
b 6 February 1833 / d 12 May 1864
Stuart served as the chief of cavalry for the Army of Northern Virginia. He became a hero to Confederates and a terror to Union forces in June 1862, when he led a daring reconnaissance around the Union Army of the Potomac. Stuart served in every major campaign until he was mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern.

Stuart grew his trademark beard after graduating from West Point in 1854. It was said he was the "only man... [a] beard improved."
