Existing comment: Breech-loading Firearms

Men armed with breech-loading firearms could fire twice as fast as their muzzle-loading opponents. Most breech-loading weapons used a combustible paper or linen cartridge containing a bullet and powder. By eliminating the need to load gunpowder and a bullet down the open end of the barrel, soldiers could reload easily -- on horseback, kneeling, or even lying down.
