In camp life, drum, and bugle calls signaled when it was time to wake up, eat, drill, or sleep. On the battlefield, the sound of these instruments carried farther than shouted commands and told soldiers when to advance or retreat. In time, bugles proved easier to carry and more effective to hear over the din of battle.
