Existing comment: John Brown's Pike, 1859
John Brown planned to arm slaves with pikes when he led them in revolt.
For the slave uprising that he hoped to initiate at Harpers Ferry, John Brown placed an order in Connecticut for the manufacture of 1,000 pikes to be used by men he assumed would be untrained in the loading and firing of muskets. John Brown's pikes later became a symbol of the horrors that his failed insurrection might have caused.
