Existing comment: Henry "Box" Brown
Philadelphia
b 1816 / Escaped: March 1849

In one of the most remarkable escapes on the Underground Railroad, Henry Brown shipped himself as freight, enclosed in a wooden crate, from Richmond to Philadelphia. Twenty hours later, with the box upside down much of the trip, it was opened at the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. After his deliverance, Brown lectured on the evils of slavery and published an autobiography.

Philadelphia abolitionists are shown opening the crate in which enslaved Henry Brown had himself shipped from Richmond to freedom in Pennsylvania.
