Existing comment: John Randolph ridiculed the political alliance between the northerner John Quincy Adams and southern Senator Henry Clay that gave Adams the presidency. He called Clay "corrupt... like a rotten mackerel.. that shined and stunk." Rather than continue to berate one another with words, they turned to guns. Valuing honor more than life, Clay summoned Randolph to a duel. Both men survived.
