Existing comment: Daniel Morgan's sword, about 1776
The inscription translates, "Draw me not without reason." On the reverse: "Sheath me not without honor."

Daniel Morgan, captain of a Virginia rifle company, clashed with authority figures throughout his life. A gifted battlefield tactician, he employed guerrilla tactics learned from Indians. Morgan's efficient marksmen saw action throughout the northern campaigns.. In the South, they won one of the most decisive victories of the war, at Cowpens, South Carolina, where Morgan tricked and captured most of a British army of light infantry.
