Existing comment: Commanding the Continental Army, 1775-1783
Letter from General George Washington to John Parke Custis, Morristown, New Jersey, 22 January 1777

Washington routinely reported to Congress about his progress and setbacks and pleaded to governors to fill militia units. His letters to his wife and stepson, John Parke Custis, addressed both the military and domestic. Here, he writes to his stepson that he "might have cleared the Jerseys entirely of the Enemy" if his army was not so small and "a mixed, motley crew."
