Existing comment: Thomas Jefferson's writing desk, 1776 (reproduction)
The desk on which Jefferson wrote the document that announced America's independence

The creation in the early nineteenth century of a reproduction of the mahogany desk on which Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence points to the importance that citizens of the early republic placed on its founding. The original, which resides at the Smithsonian, was designed by Jefferson while a delegate at congress in 1776, but he had been thinking about the rights of men long before.
