Existing comment: Forgotten Children
Poor, enslaved, and Native American children did not remain children very long; all were put to work at a very early age. When physically large enough to cut wood, they tended livestock, cared for crops, cooked, or sewed, leaving little time for play or schooling. A white family had, on average, six or seven children -- one-fourth to one-half of whom died before age eleven.
