Africans were first brought to Virginia in 1619. Both males and females proved to be highly effective workers in the tobacco fields. Between 1690 and 1770, Virginians imported an additional 90,000 Africans. In 1705, the first slave code was drafted. With a government of, by, and for the tobacco planters, such laws benefited the slaveowners, not the slaves.
