A demand for Virginia tobacco in England led merchants to label packages for sale. Images of black me, women, or children growing and harvesting tobacco, packing it in barrels and smoking it were used. These images tend to have African features and Native American dress. Merchants joined two stereotypes to form a figure that became a symbol of Virginia. |
