Existing comment: The Revolutionary War in Virginia
Looking to find support from both resident Loyalists and blacks, the British attempted to bring the war to Virginia twice, with dismal results. At its start, Governor Dunmore's Loyalist and slave forces were driven out of Norfolk. Near its end -- when British raiders sent Gov. Thomas Jefferson fleeing from Richmond -- hundreds of slaves escaped but so did Jefferson, and the defeat at Yorktown soon followed.
