Virginia Indians developed a variety of techniques for catching fish. Then, as today, the use of a baited hook was a popular practice. Hooks were made form the tube-shaped bones of birds or mammals; the bone could be split to make two hooks. Considerable dexterity was required to catch a fish unsing only a simple hook attached to a string.
