For thousands of years, hunting was performed with spears and atlatls, but by the middle of the Woodland Period the bow and arrow replaced them. The bow allowed hunters to drastically reduce animal populations, creating competition between groups of hunters vying for the same resources. As the bow and arrow became used for warfare, settlements became fortified. |
