Chief Powhatan, or Wahunsenecawh, was the paramount chief of Tsenacomacah, the name the Powhatan people gave to their own land. Having united more than twenty-eight tribes into the Powhatan confederacy, he was the main political and military leader to interact with English settlers at Jamestown. After his death in 1618, he was succeeded by his brother, Opechancanough.

Excavating Powhatan's Headquarters
Much of what is known about Werowocomoco is because of research conducted by the Department of Historic Resources, in partnership with the College of William and Mary and Virginia Indians. Among the items discovered by archaeologists along a forty-five-acre site near the York River were numerous ceramic sherds, copper and glass trade goods, and the footprint of a seventy-two-foot longhouse.
