The Seat of Powhatan
Werowocomoco was the principal residence and headquarters of Powhatan, the paramount chief of the Powhatan confederacy. When the English arrived in 1607, the Powhatan were the dominant political force in the Chesapeake region. Research suggests that Weowocomoco was established as early as 1200 and that the site had religious significance for the Powhatan people. |
